we noticed boo radley had some wounds on his ear this weekend and thought omar little maybe scrapped him up a bit. then we noticed another and another. next thing we knew, omar little had a couple spots on his ear. we were pretty sure it was contagious and unfortunately looked a lot like ringworm.

i’ve had cats my entire life and never had any of my own catch ringworm. we think boo radley must have gotten it at the vet a few weeks ago. we can’t really think of any other way. it’s terrible. all three of them have to get dipped once a week for 4-6 weeks and i hear it smells like rotten eggs. not such a good thing for someone with an insane sense of smell. i’ll find out just how bad it is in a few minutes.

the plus side, ringworm requires insane cleaning. i got out the seventeen thousand dollar kirby that the dude and i bought years ago from a door to door salesman (after having already indulged in a few beers – suckers) and went to town on every surface imaginable. we only have carpet in our bedroom so we pulled out the bed and got all of that. every piece of upholstery, every surface of hardwoods and behind everything you can imagine has been vacuumed . at the same time, i have been washing all blankets, rugs, towels, sofa cover, etc… you name it, it’s clean.

while i was in the bedroom i noticed some dust on the walls. i’m usually pretty good about getting out the swiffer and cleaning the walls but the gross popcorn ceiling, not so much. needless to say, i went to town on the walls, ceiling, baseboards, picture frames, door frames and ceiling fan. i felt a little OCD but every once in a while you just have to go at it whole hog.

    Ugh, that sucks! Blackie brought ringworm back from the SPCA when we adopted her, and then Silver caught it, and then we went through that whole mess. The dipping didn’t end up working – oral medication finally did the trick. We got stuff that was flavored with tuna, and the kittens really dug it.

    RILLY?? That sounds so freaking much better. I want that instead of the dipping. This crap is such a long ass process.

    ETA – okay, the dude said they try the dip first because it’s the least toxic. i sure hope it works!

    I hope the dip works for you, too! Let’s just say that the kittens weren’t wild about getting wet, and Rob had to get in the shower (which had a glass door) with the kittens and convince them otherwise. He would be covered with dip by the time he was done.

    The dip drama happened for so long that the we ended up diseased, too, which was gross.

    oh no!! i don’t know if it’s better that we’re taking them in to have it done or not. thing is, it costs freaking $30 per cat per visit and they have to go at least 4 times! at the same time, i don’t think i want to be doing that myself.

    i’m so paranoid we’ll get it so i’ve been completely obsessed with washing my hands and clothes.

    wow, that sucks. on the plus side, your house will be sooo delightfully clean. and i was happy with the fact that i finally did the winter/summer clothing switch and reoranized the entire closet today, which, hello, was long overdue. but you’ve far outdone me!

    It was actually pretty comical to watch two teeny kittens attempt to kick Rob’s ass. Rob didn’t find it so amusing, though. I remember that the dip itself wasn’t cheap, and we were annoyed that we were paying for it and the vet visits and it didn’t work.

    The girls were also shaved before the dipping started, which was pretty amusing, too. Tee hee, funny looking kittens! I should dig up some of those old kitten photos…

    The clean house OCD is one I can really get behind, though.

    Although the fact that I’ve never even thought about applying my swiffer to my walls now makes me feel like a slack ass.

    oh but that’s such a great feeling, too. i still need to move some things into the winter closet and it’s been hot down here for months!

    dude, what kind of house do you keep?

    no really, i only discovered the need when i was up cleaning ceiling fans and happened to look over on the wall and was appalled at what i saw. i decided right then that i’d try to make it a bi-annual chore.

    Oh man, I am so so so sorry to hear about this! You must be super grossed out. Like everyone else said, at least you get a super clean house out of it? Poor kittehs, too.
